Recap: Up in Smoke - Season 13 - Episode 2

Nathan leaps into action when fire spreads through Goldie National Park, and Elizabeth spearheads the relief efforts in Hope Valley.

Bill, Nathan, Oliver and Joseph head into the forest to find the kids. The flames have erupted, spreading among the forest. Lee, Henry and Mike all head toward the forest with the fire pump. Elizabeth and Little Jack reassure Minnie that everything will be all right. The men find the girls in the woods, and the girls inform they split up with the boys to cover more ground with the trail markers. Nathan and Joseph head off to find the boys.

When Oliver and Bill return the girls safely to town, Elizabeth is concerned that Bill inhaled too much smoke.

Nathan and Joseph find the boys. As they are trying to escape, a tree falls in their path, forcing them to find a different way out. They eventually make it back to the town, and Joseph credits Nathan for being calm under pressure and finding a way out.

Nathan informs Edie that her ranch is in danger and offers to find her help, but she rushes off quickly to save her animals.

Lee returns and regretting informs Rosemary that Goldie Park and its playhouse have burned down. Rosemary says that she is happy that the kids are safe.

Lee and Nathan decide a mandatory evacuation is necessary and begin informing the townspeople. He also tells Lucas that Edie left for her ranch, and Lucas rushes off. He arrives at her ranch and helps open the gate for her horses. She insists on freeing her cattle before leaving. They make it back to the town safely and notify Lee that the fire isn’t moving toward Hope Valley. Lee announces a halt on the evacuation and Rosemary goes to announce over radio that Hope Valley can be used as sanctuary for neighboring towns threatened by the fire. Henry, Mike, and Mei head to Benson Hills to offer help.

Nathan informs Elizabeth, Allie and Little Jack that he is heading to Benson Hills to help. Lee recruits Elizabeth to help prepare food and shelter for the evacuees from Benson Hills, while Lucas leads a team of townspeople to stop the spread of the fire.

At Minnie’s, Elizabeth notices the power go out. She immediately rushes to the clinic to check on the insulin. Luckily, Dr. Carter was able to get the backup generator on so that the insulin can stay frozen.

The first group of evacuees arrive to Hope Valley. Among them is Mayor Maisie Hickam, who tells Lee that her family is safe, but that Benson Hills is in bad shape. Mayor Hickam asks Elizabeth to comfort Gwendolyn, a young girl from Benson Hills whose father is still missing. Nathan assures her that he will go back and look for her father.

Rosemary and Elizabeth see Lucas helping distract some of the kids with magic and have the idea of him doing a magic show for them later.

A man tries to steal a whole box of food and Bill steps in and tackles him. Bill then struggles to breathe, and the man walks off with the food. Oliver apprehends him and arrests him. The townspeople check on Bill and bring him to the infirmary.

Rosemary gathers the kids at the saloon for Lucas’ magic show. He does a disappearing handkerchief trick and the kids love it. Edie watches over with a smile.

Dr. Carter lets Elizabeth know that Bill is doing better and he is resting in the infirmary.

Elizabeth and Rosemary see Gwendolyn laughing with Lee and Goldie. Rosemary asks Gwendolyn to stay with them and help babysit Goldie until her dad returns, which Gwendolyn accepts.

Allie surprises Oliver at the prison with extra popcorn from Lucas’ magic show. Oliver tells Allie that he missed her over the summer. After she leaves, their prisoner teases Oliver and asks if Allie is his girlfriend, and Oliver tells him to mind his business.

Nathan, Henry, Mike and Mei return from fighting the fire near Benson Hills. Nathan breaks the news to Gwendolyn that her father is in the hospital in Buxton. Rosemary tells Gwendolyn that they will take her to Buxton as soon as they can. Nathan also informs Mayor Hickam that Benson Hills is in bad shape. Half of the houses and the main street have burned down. Luckily, everyone is accounted for and there are no fatalities. Lee assures her that they will help her rebuild. She thanks them all and goes breaks the news to her townspeople. Allie gives Nathan a big hug when she sees that he returned.

Back at his office, Lucas runs into Edie. He comforts her for what she lost in the fire and gifts her one of her Uncle Ernie’s coins that he found. She tells him that she loved his show. He holds her hand as they smile at each other.

Elizabeth brings Nathan food and they tell each other how much they love one another. Nathan falls asleep at his chair while Elizabeth is talking and she smiles.

Bill is still recovering in the infirmary and is eager to leave and get back to work. Dr. Carter tells him that his breathing is improving and that he may be able to head home soon.

Elizabeth returns home and begins to unpack the bag she prepared for evacuation. The power comes back on. She then sits down and begins journaling to reflect. She thinks about how things can be difficult, and mourning is important, but there is also so much good around them.

Lee meets with Bill, Lucas, and Nathan. Lee tells them that he suspects A.J. McGinty started the fire. Nathan assures him that they will investigate the cause of the fire. Lee states that he will not rest until McGinty is behind bars.
