Recap: Auld Lang Syne - Season 4 - Episode 9
After jumping in the pond, Elliot and Kat scramble to find Tessa to warn her about the explosion at the Lingermore party in 1925. They arrive at the Landry farm and notice that Fern’s older self is there, meaning they aren’t in 1925, but rather 1979. They decide to approach Fern for more answers. Fern mentions that Elliot makes a sacrifice in 1925 during the time of the explosion. Kat and Elliot quickly hide behind the house as Colton and Del approach in their truck. They exit the truck with a newborn baby. Kat and Elliot watch as Fern is introduced to baby Kat. Fern smiles to herself while calling the baby Kitty Kat and begins to sing to her.
In the present, Jacob finds old letters in a drawer and reads one that says, “Your lie is known. Time will tell.” When Kat and Elliot return to the present, Del tells them that Sam knows about the pond and explains his history with Casey. Jacob brings down the letters and explains that someone else must know about the pond too, since Alice and Kat were edited out of the film from 1979. Kat and Elliot share their concerns about Tessa dying at the New Year’s Party in 1925. Del tells them to stop jumping in the pond as things are getting too dangerous.
Jacob and Kat sit by the fire together to catch up. Kat asks Jacob about his relationship with Abby. Jacob shares that he and Abby are planning on telling Louis soon. Jacob mentions that he doesn’t want Kat to go in the pond either, but Kat explains that Elliot needs to try to save his mom.
Kat finds Elliot and suggests they jump in the pond immediately instead of waiting around hoping something might change. She explains that she doesn’t want Elliot to have any regrets about not trying to save his mom. They decide to jump and leave a note behind for Del. Del and Alice find the note and Alice rushes out of the house.
Kat and Elliot return to 1925. They are greeted by Cliff at the house. He immediately begins to question them but remains peaceful since the town has been quiet ever since their last visit, especially because Tessa is nowhere to be found. He tells them that Fern is at Lingermore preparing for her screen test. Kat and Elliot leave to find her.
They arrive at Lingermore and Kat immediately runs in front of the camera to warn Fern. Grayson storms in as he overhears Kat warning Fern and yells for camera to be cut. He confirms that Kat and Elliot’s theory is correct, and Tessa is going to “die.” Tessa appears and they explain that they devised a plan to stage her death. Their goal is to help Tessa escape the bootlegging business and clean up Port Haven while the movie is shooting so they don’t lose funding.
Alice emerges from the pond in 1979 and is caught by Griffin. He takes a picture of her on his film camera. He then tells Alice that he had heard the pond was magical and that she just proved him right. She begs him not to tell Colton. Tessa appears holding baby Elliot, explaining that she was just out for a walk. Griffin snaps a picture of Alice standing alongside Tessa and Elliot. Alice joins Tessa as they walk back from the pond together.
In the present day, Jacob and Abby meet up at The Point. Abby is preparing for the launch event for the winery. She tells Jacob that she wants him to be there. He is skeptical, worried that the drama between him and Louis will ruin the event, but Abby reaffirms that she wants him there. Abby mentions that the event is going to be in the Lingermore catacombs since its bootlegging history is memorable. Jacob looks concerned about being in the tunnels.
Alice and Tessa walk back from the pond in 1979. Tessa opens up about being overwhelmed with motherhood, and questions whether she is a good mother like Del. Alice tries to reassure her. Tessa rushes off after remembering Evelyn asked her to babysit Louis.
In 1925, Tessa and Elliot go to the present-day Augustine house. Tessa tells Elliot about her plan to buy the home and pass it down through the family. Elliot learns that it was always an Augustine home, but the family had to sell it due to financial struggles. Tessa shares how glad she is that Elliot was taken in by the Landrys. Elliot reassures Tessa that he is going to make sure nothing happens to her. She insists that she will be okay and reveals that she plans to return to the present with him and Kat when everything is over.
Jacob goes to Danny’s for guidance about revealing his relationship with Abby to Louis. Jacob apologizes for all of the hardship he put Danny through and mentions that they used to dream of owning a farm together. Jacob proposes they run Landry farm together as equal partners. Danny happily agrees and goes to the kitchen to grab celebratory beers. Jacob notices a typewriter on the table and recognizes the font from the letters being sent to the house. He quickly rushes off before sharing a beer with Danny.
In 1979, Alice overhears Colton and Griffin arguing about Tessa. Colton mentions that he’s noticed Griffin and Tessa spending a lot of time together and that he needs to back down and respect her relationship with Vic. Griffin claims that there is nothing going on between them and storms out.
In 1925, Kat and Elliot are returning to the Landry farm to get ready for the New Year’s party. They notice Fern and Cliff out on the porch kissing. Cliff professes his love for Fern and asks her to move back into the house with him. He then gets on a knee and proposes to her. She agrees and tells him that she loves him like no one else she has ever met. Cliff tells her that he can’t wait to give her a midnight New Year’s kiss at the party that night. Kat tells Elliot that the proposal is “how it’s done” and Elliot grabs her for a kiss.
Kat approaches Cliff to remind him that they are on the same side. Kat explains that whatever happens at the party, they all want to keep Fern and Port Haven safe. Not exactly sure what she is talking about, Cliff grows concerned but agrees that anything that keeps Fern safe has his blessing.
In the present, Jacob takes a closer look at the letters. Del notices he is looking at the letters as she goes to answer a knock on the door. It’s Danny. Jacob immediately turns to him while pointing at the letters. Danny reveals that he wrote the letters.
In 1979, Alice rushes into the Augustine house because she hears baby Elliot crying and the smoke alarm going off from the toaster being left on. Tessa returns with Louis as Alice comes back outside trying to calm Elliot. Alice quickly hands Elliot back to Tessa and flees as Evelyn’s car is approaching. Evelyn immediately asks what all the chaos is about and Tessa explains that she fell asleep while watching the kids. When she woke up, Louis was gone so she went to search for him and found him at the pond. Evelyn angrily asks what kind of mother would fall asleep while babysitting and then leave her baby alone.
In the present, Del asks Danny why he sent the letters. Danny explains that he always blamed himself for Jacob’s disappearance until he overheard Kat and Alice talking about Jacob being alive a few years back. He was upset that he became the scapegoat for Jacob’s disappearance when the Landrys knew where he was. He didn’t write the letters to hurt them; he just hoped that the letters would encourage them to come clean to the town about where Jacob was. Del explains that she lied to protect Jacob but apologizes for not considering how it affected Danny. Danny then asks where Jacob was during the years he was missing. Jacob promises to tell Danny the truth at some point but mentions that he probably won’t believe him.
At the Herald in 1925, Kat and Fern are getting ready for the party. Kat asks Fern when she plans on breaking things off. Fern explains that they separated months ago, but they are acting like they are still together to appease Nate Simon, who oversees their Hollywood funding. Elliot appears in his tuxedo, and Fern leaves them to finish getting ready. Kat shares her concern about ruining everything that Fern is so excited about in her life.
In 1979, Alice spies as everyone gets together for their party. Before Tessa arrives, Colton pulls Vic aside to see if everything is okay. Vic shares that he’s been worried about her and that she hasn’t seemed like herself. Colton immediately looks toward Griffin, but reassures Vic that everything will be okay, reminding him that they love each other and have a beautiful child together. Tessa arrives and is met by a cold stare from Evelyn.
In the present, Jacob and Del reflect on mistakenly letting Danny bear the responsibility of Jacob’s disappearance. Jacob’s phone rings – it’s Abby. Del advises Jacob to not make the same mistake in his other relationships and to look out for Abby. Jacob agrees but doesn’t want to go the marketing launch anymore. He still feels the effects from his experience in the catacombs while Cyrus Goodwin occupied Lingermore. Del tells Jacob she believes he is already making strides toward letting go of his past trauma by growing closer to Abby.
The party begins at Lingermore in 1925. Elliot and Kat overhear Grayson and Nate talking about the staged explosion planned for production. Elliot realizes that they never mentioned to Tessa and Grayson that the explosion happens the night of the party. They begin to panic that the plan is going to fall apart. Elliot believes Tessa lied and is planning on settling things during the party, using it as a distraction to run one more job to settle her debt with Capone. Just before Elliot leaves to find Tessa, an undercover police officer recognizes him as Tom Buchanan and arrests him. He asks Kat to find Fern and stay safe. A photo of him is taken as he is escorted out of the party. He is brought outside to Cliff and begins to plead his innocence. He warns Cliff that Tessa is in danger, and Cliff agrees to let him go. Cliff informs his fellow officer that they will stalk Elliot from a distance.
Kat finds Fern and explains everything. Grayson overhears and grows concerned that Tessa running another job is going to ruin it all. Grayson escorts Kat to the tunnel entrance in hopes she can stop things from going south. He hands her a gun and returns to the party to keep Fern safe.
In the present, Del arrives at the Goodwin’s Good Wine launch event. She finds Abby and compliments her on how well the event is going. Abby thanks her but tells shares she is concerned since Jacob hasn’t arrived. Del tries to explain but Louis calls her over to make a speech to the crowd. Abby begins, talking about a farmer who taught her the meaning of New Brunswick soil and history. Jacob appears during her speech, and she stops when she notices him. Louis turns around and immediately confronts Jacob, telling him to leave. Jacob explains that he is there to ask for his blessing in dating his daughter. Louis grows confused but Abby clarifies that they are in love. Louis reveals to Abby that the Landrys have been blackmailing the Goodwins through their family will. Jacob tries to defend himself, explaining that it’s not the whole story, but Abby rushes off in disbelief.
In 1979, Alice continues to spy on the party at the Landry home. Del and Colton notice Tessa and Griffin talking alone in the kitchen and go over to confront them. Griffin explains that he was just talking about his camera and asks Vic to take a picture of the four of them. After Vic takes the picture, he notices Tessa wearing a new bracelet. Griffin reveals that he gave it to her because it reminded him of a fairy tale that Tessa talked about. Vic immediately grows angry and gets in Griffin’s face. Colton’s breaks it up and demands Griffin to leave. Griffin warns everyone that their relationships are hanging on by a thread, and that Colton doesn’t seem to discourage Evelyn’s crush on him. Colton demands he leaves again and Vic escorts him to the door.

In 1979, Evelyn tries to tell Del that what Griffin said about her and Colton wasn’t true. Del says that she could already tell that Evelyn loved Colton but that it was okay because nothing happened. Colton tries to get the party going again, but everyone agrees the night is over. Evelyn reiterates that the day was already ruined and reveals what happened earlier when Tessa was babysitting. Vic is disappointed with Tessa for leaving Elliot unattended. Fern suddenly comes downstairs and eerily says to Tessa, “This is how it begins, Coop. And I’ll tell you how it ends. You’re going to kill your son.” Alice rushes off to go home.
In 1925, Elliot comes down to the catacombs to try and stop Tessa. She tries to tell him that everything will be okay, but Cliff appears with his gun raised, telling them all to freeze.
Del and Jacob are leaving the wine launch with Rita, who is disappointed she never got to pitch her idea to record a podcast episode in the catacombs about the tragic 1925 explosion, which she says resulted in “so many deaths.” Jacob immediately gets concerned and tries to confirm there was only one death, since the old song says five went in and four came out. Rita explains that the song means that four of the bodies were identified and one of them was never found. Jacob runs off.
At the party in 1925, Fern begins to grow concerned about Cliff since he hasn’t arrived for their midnight kiss. The 10-second countdown to the New Year begins without him. As Cliff begins to arrest them, Tessa pulls the gun that she stole from Kat and points it at Cliff. Just as the partygoers celebrate the New Year, Cliff’s fellow officer screams at Tessa to put her gun down. She continues to point it toward Cliff, who is standing next to Kat. Concerned for Kat’s safety, Elliot runs across to push Kat out of the way, just as Tessa fires toward Cliff. The bullet strikes Elliot and he hits the ground. Fireworks go off at the party and Fern begins to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” Kat goes to treat Elliot, who is still conscious but bleeding at an alarming rate. Tessa puts the gun down and is detained by the police officer. Percy goes after Cliff, and they wrestle each other to the ground, knocking over a lamp. Kat grabs Elliot and pulls him down the tunnel. The fire from the lamp catches a trail of alcohol on the ground and reaches a box of dynamite. Everyone at the party gasps as a loud explosion can be heard from the distance.
