MATERIALS:
- White garments to dye
- Soda ash dye (For natural fabrics if dying natural, For synthetic fabrics if you’re dying synthetic)
- Squeeze bottles
- Metal rack to rest garment on while it dyes
- Plastic tub or sheet to set rack over
- Rubber bands or twine
- Rubber or plastic gloves
INSTRUCTIONS:
TO PREP THE DYE
1. Pour some of the soda ash into the squeeze bottle, add water. The more diluted the dye is the more pastel the colors will come out.
2. With your finger over the tip, shake the bottle well to mix.
3. Make as many bottles of dye as you need for the colors you want.
TO CREATE THE CRUMPLE TIE DYE
1. Crumple the garment up into a ball in your hands then flatten it a little on your work surface.
2. Place rubber bands around the crumpled-up garment in pizza slice sections so that the bands are evenly spaced.
3. On the rack over a bin, squirt different colors of dye onto the garment. Make sure to wear gloves.
4. Allow the dye to set for the recommended amount of time according to the directions.
5. Wash, wear and enjoy!
TO CREATE THE SPIRAL TIE DYE
1. Lay your garment flat and pinch where you want the center of your spiral.
2. Twist the garment into a circular swirl on the table.
3. Place rubber bands around the swirled garment in pizza slice sections so that the bands are evenly spaced.
4. On the rack over a bin, squirt different colors of dye onto the garment. Make sure to wear gloves.
5. Allow the dye to set for the recommended amount of time according to the directions.
6. Wash, wear and enjoy!
