WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO WASH OUR MAKEUP BRUSHES AND SPONGES?
Kym: If you have breakouts, most women immediately blame foundation, but it could be the brushes. Even if your skin is “clean,” your brushes are still collecting oil, dust, dead skin and fallout from greasy hair products you spray around your mirror. It’s a terrible cycle: not washing your brush allows it to accumulate bacteria, dust and dirt so when you swirl it in your expensive face powder or gel eyeliner, transferring all that grime into your beloved products!
HOW DO WE KEEP OUR MAKEUP AND BRUSHES CLEAN?
Kym: Weekly cleaning: wet the brush in a bowl of warm water, then pour a little bit of baby shampoo in your hand and rub the brush in the shampoo and then dip it back in the water and swish clean. TIP: Make sure the hairs are pointing down the entire time! The water can run down into the ferrule and loosen the glue holding the brush together over time.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE BRUSHES TO DRY?
Kym: It takes a long time, most take hours and large blush and kabuki brushes can take 10-24 hours to dry! This is why most women don’t clean their brushes enough. WHAT ABOUT LIPSTICK AND EYESHADOW?
Kym: Lipsticks carry a lot of bacteria: wipe off the top layer with a tissue, then pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol or vodka into a shot glass, dunk lipstick for 30 seconds.
Eyeshadow: Using a tissue, rub it quickly to brush off the top layer and then spritz it quickly with sanitation mist or rubbing alcohol) There’s a great product that our makeup department use here called, “Beauty So Clean,” it’s a sanitation mist.
HOW DO MAKEUP BAGS EFFECT MAKEUP HYGIENE?
Kym: The kind of makeup bag you carry your products in could affect the amount of germs its carrying. We often don’t realize that it’s the dark, moist places that bacteria thrives in. So if your makeup bag is dark and the makeup is moist, well, that’s a problem. TIP= use a clear makeup bag that allows the light in. Take your makeup bag out of your purse and leave it on your desk so it’s exposed to a little light every day.
