Spring Allergies

Co-host of the talkshow, “The Doctors,” Dr. Nita Landry visits Home & Family to talk about spring allergies, which is caused by the release of histamine. Symptoms include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing and nasal congestion.

According to The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) there are some raw fruits & vegetables that contain proteins that are very similar to pollen. This can confuse the immune system and cause an allergic reaction or even make existing symptoms worse, which is referred to as cross-reactivity. In the case of pollen and foods, the result of cross-reactivity is called oral allergy syndrome (OAS).

Spring allergies from birch tree pollen have an oral cross-reactivity with the following raw fruits & vegetables:

· apple
· apricot
· cherry
· peach
· pear
· plum
· kiwi
· carrot
· celery
· parsley
· peanut
· soybean
· almond
· hazelnut

Pesto Chicken and Beans
