DIY finalist Amber Kemp-Gerstel has a Fourth of July-themed picnic basket that you can make at home.

Materials

  • Wooden crate
  • 1⁄2“ Pine sheeting (for lid)
  • 1⁄2” Pine strips cut to 2 1⁄2 ”x 11”
  • 1” x 1 1⁄2” inch pine dowels (for legs about 13 3⁄4“)
  • Craft Paint: Bahama Blue, Watermelon Slice, Snow White
  • Star Stencils (various sizes)
  • Miter Box & Saw (22 1⁄2 degree angle for legs)
  • Hinges (1 1⁄2“)
  • Velcro

Patriotic Picnic Baskets - Home & Family

Steps

1. All these materials are easily found in your local building supply & craft stores.

2. Start with simple pine crates (18” x 12 1⁄2” x 9 1/2 )

3. Cut pine sheeting to size for lid (18 x 12 1⁄2 )

4. Use lid scraps to create securing strips (about 2” in x 12”)

5. Sand all rough edges

6. Cut dowels to size for legs (16in length)

7. Glue and nail securing strips to underside of lid

8. Paint legs, let dry

9. Paint box, let dry

10. Paint box lid, let dry

11. Stencil stars

12. Screw hinges on legs/top 13. Add Velcro
