Amazing Alliums
Shirley shows how a special bulb, that looks like an onion, can bloom into fantastic flowers called Alliums come Spring. They are gorgeous flowers that are worth the investment of time to plant now. Shirley calls them the in between bulb as they blossom after Daffodils and right before Peonies.
- The planting season for Alliums varies based on where you live, but it is generally between September and December. One way to find out is by checking the back of the label on your bag of bulbs - which has a map that indicates ideal planting time for various zones around the country. You can find you zone, and then plant at the appropriate time.
- To plant Allium Bulbs, dig holes 6 inches deep in well-draining soil and direct sunlight. The bulbs should be planted in groups of 3-5, and holes should be arranged in a zig-zag pattern. Because of the long stalks, planting Alliums in a row does not provide them with adequate space.
- Cover Alliums with mulch, water when soil feels dry, and then wait for blossoms to appear in the spring!
