Mark DIY - Tufting in 3 Stages

Stage 1

Determine the location of buttons on surface using a Quilter’s Rule, and mark with pencil. Holes will be drilled where demarked -- these will be the anchor holes for the buttons that will be threaded through the top. Foam (cut to size) is laid atop the surface. Batting (cut to size) is placed on top of foam. Stage 2

Fabric (cut to size) is laid out over the top of the batting and foam. Fabric is stretched and stapled into place on the underside of the surface. Fabric excess is trimmed close to the staples on the underside of the surface. Covering the fabric-covered buttons: • Buy button forms at any fabric store. • Follow the instructions that come with the button forms. • Cut a piece of fabric with the template that is included. • Just fold the fabric under the teeth on the metal button. • Then take the cover and you press it down – you can use a spool to apply pressure.

Stage 3

Buttons are installed -- Thread the (8" long) needle through the holes from under the surface through the foam/batting/fabric, then marked carefully on the fabric. Threaded with twine onto long needle, stuck through the top of the fabric/batting/foam, through the holes in the surface. Three options to secure button: • Twine is knotted, pulled tight, and stapled to the underside of the surface; slack is folded over and stapled again. Repeat until there is no more slack. • Wrap twine around a finishing nail. Twist the nail to tighten the button. Staple the ends of either side of finishing nail into the wood. • Place a washer on surface, and partially drill in a screw. Wrap the twine around the screw until button is taut. Drill the screw in the rest of the way. Get more great crafts and recipes from "Home & Family" on Pinterest at http://pinterest.com/hallmarkchannel.
