DIY Suitcase Picnic Table

A vintage suitcase into a handy picnic table.

Materials

  • Hot Glue Gun/Glue Sticks
  • (4) Four 2”x2” Square Dowels (cut lengths will depend on size of suitcase)
  • Vintage Suitcase (or one that looks vintage)
  • Screwdriver or Screw Gun
  • 1” Drywall Screws
  • 4 Folding Leg Brackets
  • Fabric Gift Bags (assorted colors and sizes)
  • Plastic Cups, Cutlery, Plates, etc. – service for four
  • Velcro Dots
  • Nylon Strap Cord or similar straps
  • Scissors
  • 4 Narrow Hinges (OPTIONAL DEPENDING ON SUITCASE)

Directions

1. If suitcase only opens up 90 degrees, remove hinges and add narrow hinges.
2. Measure the space that you have for your legs.
3. Cut legs depending on size of suitcase.
4. Attach one side to the folding leg bracket. Do this for all four legs.
5. Take the leg bracket and attach it to the inside of the suitcase. Screw in place. You may want to add a little hot glue to make sure they are sturdy.
6. Assure that all the legs fit inside the suitcase when closed.
7. Take gift bags, Velcro and straps, and start attaching them to the inside of both sides of your suitcase. These will hold plates, cups, cutlery, etc. Make sure to figure out layout before gluing and attaching.
8. Fill with goodies and enjoy your new DIY Suitcase Picnic Table!

TIPS
1. Using vintage suitcases (or even decorative ones) are essential because they are made of wood, thus it is easier to drill and screw into them than a regular suitcase.
2. Using a vintage suitcase, you will find that they usually come with a hinge on the side. If yours does, remove that mechanism. The new decorative suitcases, however, do not fold all the way open, so take off the hinges and add a narrow hinge instead.
3. If you buy the 2”x2” at the hardware store, they will cut the wood for you.
