DIY Embellished Lampshades

Orly Shani shows how to get just the right light in your space.

MATERIALS:

TO CREATE THE EMBROIDERED FABRIC LAMPSHADE:

    • Embroidered mesh fabric
    • Lamp with straight drum lampshade
    • Fabri-Tac
    • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
    • Soft tape measure

TO CREATE THE EMBROIDERED APPLIQUE LAMPSHADE:

    • Embroidered appliques or patches
    • Fabri-Tac
    • Fabric scissors

    OPTIONAL:

    • Flat back gems or pearls

    INSTRUCTIONS:

TO CREATE THE EMBROIDERED FABRIC LAMPSHADE:

    1. First you need to determine how much fabric you need. Use your soft tape measure to find the circumference and height of your lampshade. Add about 2” to the circumference, this is the width of your fabric. The height is the height of the shade.

PRO TIP: If you’re using a tapered lampshade, which isn’t ideal, cut your fabric a few inches too big on all sides so you have more wiggle room to pull and fit the fabric.

    2. To attach the fabric to the lampshade. Place your fabric face down on your workspace with your lampshade in the center. Apply a line of glue to the seam of the lampshade, pull one end of the fabric up onto the lampshade and press the edge into the Fabri-Tac to secure. Allow the glue to dry because you’ll have to pull the fabric tight!

    3. Add another line of Fabri-Tac over where you laid the first. Pull the other end of the fabric up onto the seam and press it into the glue. Pull taut enough so that the fabric hugs the lampshade but doesn’t buckle.

    4. Use fabric scissors to trim the fabric to the edges of the lampshade.

    5. Cut out some excess embroidered flowers or details from the fabric to glue over the ones you cut off on the edges so that the pattern isn’t cut off and cute embroidered details hang over the edges of the lampshade.

    6. Put the shade on the lamp and enjoy!

TO CREATE THE EMBROIDERED APPLIQUE LAMPSHADE:

    1. Use Fabri-Tac to add the appliques, you can apply glue all over the back of each applique or just add glue in the center and let the edges be lifted to create dimension, this works best with flower appliques.

    2. Add flat backed gems or pearls to create dimension. This works especially well if you have flower appliques to put in the center.

    3. Trim the appliques to the edges of the lampshade if desired.

    4. Place the lampshade on the lamp and enjoy!
