The first song in Ride— Giddy Up!— is from hit country-rock artist that many know and love, Shania Twain. The track ushers us right into the world of rodeo, in particular around Missy McMurray’s fame as a former trick rider. We see her executing a trick ride at a rodeo circuit and wowing the crowd and judges to Twain’s upbeat tune, definitely putting some “up in her giddy up”!

Episode 1 of Ride brings the audience back in time a year to the big rodeo show in Boulder, where we see legendary bull-rider Austin McMurray take his place atop a bucking bull ahead of the 8-second ride. Quaker City Night Hawks’ gravelly country rock song “Duendes” pulls us right into the action as Austin wraps his bull rope, tightens his helmet, and prepares for the competition.

About the Band:
Quaker City Night Hawks are a rock and blues group from Forth Worth, Texas, with a gritty, desert, southern sound. The group has spent the last few years traveling the country in support of their Lightning Rod Records debut, an album that mixed the greasy strut of 1970s rock with doses of down-and-dirty Texas blues, science fiction, and Bible Belt boogie. The groups’ members are Texans by birth, but their music has whipped up its own geography with a spacey, southern stomp.

Allison Russell’s plucky, hopeful track “You’re Not Alone”—accompanied by vocals from Brandi Carlile—brings us to the McMurray Ranch in present day, a year after the rodeo circuit in Boulder. While Missy and McMurray matriarch Isabel continue to grieve the loss of their beloved husband and son, they do their best to keep moving forward on the ranch. Just as the song says, they truly aren’t alone in the family they’ve created amongst each other.

When the McMurrays and their friends relax later that night by the campfire with drinks, Missy and Cash spend time catching up now that he's back from active duty. Townes’ lyrics about being there for one another when you need it couldn’t be more fitting as the gang gets back together. While Cash and Missy bond over their passion for bull riding and the mental strength and conviction it takes to succeed in rodeo, it's clear that there are other feelings bubbling to the surface between them.

Later in the episode, the McMurray clan ventures to a bar for some dancing and two-stepping, and Tuff shows off his singing and guitar playing with two songs from his band. Tuff belts out the upbeat, country-rockin’ track “Cornfields Or Cadillacs”, while Missy and Val catch up over drinks, Val gets Cash out on the dance floor, and Gus asks Missy to join him for a dance. Cash later asks Tuff to play a slower song to dance with Missy to, and he and the band delivers with the swoony “Just Wanted You To Know”. Cash and Missy sway while they discuss their feelings for one another and her potentially leaving town, and soon Missy storms off, overcome with emotion.

After Cash successfully bull rides in a rodeo circuit, he finds Missy and hugs her in celebration – her pep talk before he went out seemed to make all the difference. The whole group is elated that Cash’s ride went well, and potential sponsors congratulate him on a job well done. Eric Church’s struttin’, swingin’ country tune plays while the whole group makes their way happily out of the rodeo and back to the ranch.
