Sophie Uliano's Festive "Foodie" Gifts in Mason Jars

Hearty Winter Soup – Mason Jar Gift:

  1. Ingredients: • 1 cup barley • 1 cup green split peas • 1 cup yellow split peas • ½ cup red lentils • 2 tbsp dried minced onion • 2 tbsp dried parsley • 1 tsp sea salt • ½ tsp lemon pepper • 1 cup twist macaroni (or an interesting shaped pasta) • 1 veggie bouillon cube • 2 bay leaves Recipe: In a quart Mason Jar, layer the barley, split peas, and lentils in the order above.
  2. Add the dried onion, parsley, salt and lemon pepper to the jar.
  3. Add the pasta.
  4. Finally top with the Bouillion Cube and the bay leaves.
  5. Screw on the lid.
  6. Fold recipe (handwritten or printed on paper) with cooking instructions, and place on top of lid.
  7. Attach your fabric circle with a rubber band.
  8. Cover the rubber band with a ribbon.
  9. Finally tuck a pretty teaspoon into the ribbon.
  10. Cooking Directions (to be added to the label that you will attach to the jar).
  11. Add the contents of the jar to a large stockpot, along with 2 stalks of celery, chopped, and 2 medium carrots, cubed.
  12. Add 3 quarts of water and 1 15-ounce can of organic diced tomatoes.
  13. Cover pot, and simmer on a medium low heat for 1 hour.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Makes 2 dozen cookies
Ingredients:

• ¾ cup white sugar
• ¾ cup packed brown sugar • 1 cup rolled oats • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ cup raisins • ½ cup chopped walnuts or Red and Green M&M’s (optional)

  1. Recipe: Layer the ingredients in a quart Mason jar in the order given.
  2. Make sure you pack down each layer after adding.
  3. Screw on the lid.
  4. Fold recipe (handwritten or printed on paper) with cooking instructions, and place on top of lid.
  5. Attach your fabric circle with a rubber band.
  6. Cover the rubber band with a ribbon.
  7. Cooking Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. In a medium bowl, cream together ¾ cup of softened butter, with 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
  9. Add the entire contents of the jar, and mix by hand until combined.
  10. Drop dough by heaping spoonfuls onto an unprepared cookie sheet.
  11. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven.

Deluxe Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:
• 1 ⅓ cup dry milk powder • 1 ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder • ¾ cup powdered sugar • ½ cup mini dark chocolate chips • ½ cup crushed candy canes • ¼ cup mini marshmallows
  1. Recipe: Layer the ingredients in the order given in a quart mason jar (place the marshmallows in a little plastic bag, as they are to be used separately to the mix, as a topping).
  2. Screw on the lid.
  3. Fold recipe (handwritten or printed on paper) with cooking instructions, and place on top of lid.
  4. Attach your fabric circle with a rubber band.
  5. Cover the rubber band with a ribbon.
  6. Tuck a teaspoon in the ribbon.


To Prepare:
When ready to enjoy, mix the contents of the jar (except for the marshmallows,) well. Add ½ cup of mix to a large mug and cover with 8-ounces of boiling water. Stir well, and top with the marshmallows.
