Recap: The Lin Family - Episode 3
Ted, Marcus, and Ella hide in a closet to discuss Nai Nai’s misunderstanding. Their parents join them to apologize to Marcus, who tries to understand why they fear her so much. They explain she’s strong-willed and expects Ted to uphold the family legacy, but Marcus isn’t convinced.
Later, Ted checks on Marcus, who’s still annoyed. Marcus notices Ted isn’t wearing his engagement ring. Ted explains Nai Nai sees him as the chosen one to carry on the family business and worries telling her the truth will change everything. Marcus insists he’ll have to tell her eventually, but Ted thinks keeping up the lie for now will make the holiday easier.
Lois prepares Christmas Eve dinner with Marcus’s childhood favorites, but worries if Nai Nai will approve. Lois expects Ella to go along with the lie for the sake of a peaceful holiday.
Nai Nai pushes for wedding details, suggesting a February date. She finds the wedding binder and disapproves of their choices, emphasizing the importance of traditions. She’s arranged an engagement photo shoot for them.
At the shoot, Ella and Marcus are visibly uncomfortable. Nai Nai critiques their lack of chemistry, prompting Ted to urge them to play the part. They overact, but Nai Nai insists they visit a fortune teller next to test their compatibility.
The fortune teller declares them a perfect match, with a divine connection. Ted questions her accuracy, but she says Ella needs to be less controlling. Ella later reveals she gave Ted’s birthdate instead of hers, meaning the fortune teller was talking about Ted and Marcus, amusing them both.
They proceed with wedding planning—tasting cakes, selecting florals, and trying on suits, all choices Ted would normally reject. While suit shopping, Ted and Marcus reminisce about how they met. Meanwhile, Ella tries on traditional wedding attire. Nai Nai compliments her, and Ella takes it in, but an old high school friend, Payton, interrupts. Shocked that Ella is getting married, Payton references Ella’s Twitter posts about her disdain for traditional marriage. Before Ella can explain, Payton snaps a selfie with her.
Ella tells Ted about the encounter, saying she covered with a lie about an ironic social media project where she’s “marrying herself.” Ted apologizes and promises to fix things.
At home, Nai Nai questions why Ella doesn’t have a ring and offers her late mother’s. She wants it in the family, and Marcus calls it an honor. Nai Nai insists Ella wear it today.
Ted realizes he has to tell the truth. Before he can, Nai Nai preempts him, announcing she’s stepping down from the company and naming Ted as the new CEO. Stunned, Ted hesitates, and Marcus jumps in to cover, saying Ted was speechless because he just asked him to be his best man. Ted and Ella later ask Marcus why he didn’t let Ted confess. Marcus insists he can’t be the one to ruin Christmas Eve for Nai Nai. Ted thanks him, and Marcus gives Ella the ring.
Lois urges Steve to inform Nai Nai about the dinner changes. Steve thanks his mom for making Ted CEO, then reveals they’re having Marcus’s favorite foods to make him comfortable. He offers to make Nai Nai a separate meal, but she says she’s too busy with wedding planning.
At the wedding venue, Marcus and Ella attempt to dance, but it’s disastrous. Nai Nai tells Ted to teach him. When Ted and Marcus dance naturally together, she is confused.
As they leave, Nai Nai excitedly presents a surprise—she’s published their engagement announcement in the newspaper. Horrified, they secretly rush to buy all the copies and burn them.
Back home, Ella helps her mom with dinner. Seeing Ted and Marcus’ love, she admits she might want that someday. She also tracks down Payton who deletes the selfie after Ella follows her on social media.
Marcus tells Ted he’s enjoyed being more involved in the planning. Ted vows to compromise more. Just as they lean in for a kiss, Nai Nai interrupts, calling them to dinner.
Marcus is thrilled with the food, and to everyone’s shock, Nai Nai approves of the change. She expresses sadness about leaving for Palm Springs tomorrow but is happy she helped with wedding plans. She’s only disappointed, and baffled, that none of her friends saw the engagement announcement.
A storm rolls in, cutting the power. Ted and Marcus head outside to fix the breaker. In the moment, they forget themselves and kiss—only for Nai Nai to see everything.
