After 12-year-old Bobby Graham's parents are killed in an automobile accident, he has problems adapting to his new life with his with Aunt and Uncle. Troubles at home and troubles at school are just some of the signs that Bobby is heading down the wrong path. Things gets even worse for Bobby when his dream of building the soapbox derby racer that he and his dad designed - is forbidden by his uncle. An unlikely mentor - with a lifetime of personal tragedies - steps in to help Bobby build his car. In the process, they find themselves rebuilding their lives.
