A Cooler Climate

When she divorces her husband of twenty-six year, Iris wants nothing from him. She feels finding true love is worth more than any monetary settlement. Unfortunately, Iris’ young lover feels differently; he leaves Iris and she finds herself alone, jobless and devastated. She has alienated and embarrassed and alienated her family; even her daughter Callie refuses to help her.

With no skills to fall back on, Iris reluctantly answers an ad to become a housekeeper for a wealthy family in Maine. From the moment Iris meets her employer, Paula Tanner, the tension mounts as Paula lays down the rules and demands that Iris call her ‘Mrs. Tanner.’ As she settles into the daily routine, she meets a local artist, Jack, who offers companionship and comic relief from her miserable state.

Iris soon realizes things are not as they seem at the Tanner residence. When Leo announces that their marriage of twenty-one years is over, Paula falls apart and refuses to leave the house. Since Paula gave Iris the chance to reclaim her life and rebuild her confidence, Iris feels obligated to stay on and take care of her.
