Keep Your Dog in Line, with Xaviera Ladd's Tips
All dog owners need to learn how to communicate proper leadership to their dog. The dogs need to learn who's in charge of the good stuff like food, furniture and fun.
A) Teach a “watch me” command. This brings the dog's eyes and focus back to you from distractions.
B) Teach a location stay like, “go to your bed” or “go to your place” and “Stay.” This will be their golden command because it has so many uses.
Dogs need leadership to be clear. Owners need to have a clear picture in their head of the behavior they want and how to get it. Too many words and hand movements confuse the dog. Less is more. The dog heard you the first time. Now wait in silence for something to happen.
Practice makes perfect. Owners should set up a manner and boundary plan and have everyone in the household practice one exercise with the dog daily, if not several times a day.
