Tools to Throw a Great Yard Sale from Trish Suhr

Social Media
  • List your yard sale on Craigslist and/or Facebook.
  • Post when and where your yard sale will take place.
  • Post photos of big ticket items such as electronics or furniture.

Signs
  • Use bright cardboard with bright letters.
  • List the address and beginning and end time.
  • Highlight big buzz phrases such as moving sale, antiques, or everything must go.

Payment
  • Wear a cash belt or fanny pack, so the money stays on your person and doesn't get stolen.
  • Get an iPhone adapter to swipe credit cards. Find out about mobile credit card processing here.

Don't Sell
  • Mattresses
  • Knives, cutlery, or weapons
  • Baby carseats or strollers

How to Sell

  • Set lawn up like a department store by grouping like items together.
  • Sort clothing into $1, $5, and $10 bins if you can't hang it up on a rack or a line between trees.
  • Offer bags to customers.
  • Schedule a charity truck pick-up to take leftovers instead of bringing unsold items back inside. Donations can be used as a tax write-off. Make room for the new!

Pricing

  • Don't overprice.
  • Know your audience.
