Greening Your Baby's Nursery with Sara Snow

Crib & Mattress
  • Babies sleep on average 15 hours a day.
  • Most mattresses are chemical wastebaskets full of synthetic materials.
  • Choose a mattress that isn't going to off-gas.
  • For the crib, pick one with non-toxic paints & finishes. Solid wood is best.
  • Buying a used crib is a great option because off-gassing has already occurred.

Bottle & Formula
  • BPA is the chemical used to make plastic clear and shatter-proof.
  • BPA has been linked to reproductive problems and other health issues.
  • Choosing glass or stainless steel is safest.
  • Latex should be avoided because it harbors bacteria.
  • Powdered formula is better and should be mixed with filtered tap or spring water.

Toys
  • Many toys are made from PVC plastics, which can present health risks.
  • PVC's are a source of dioxins, a known human carcinogen.
  • PVC bath toys contain phthalates, a known hormone disruptor.
  • Big toy companies are starting to avoid PVC's. Read the labels.
  • Safest to choose toys made from fabrics or wood.
  • Avoid toys made in China.

The Skin
  • We forget the benefits of something as simple as water and soap.
  • 60% of what we put on our skin can end up in our bodies.
  • Play it safe by choosing fragrance-free products or those scented with safe essential oils.
  • Avoid parabens.
  • Avoid anti-bacterial products around your baby.

The Diapers
  • The average baby will go through 5,000-8,000 diapers in his or her life.
  • Diapers sit in landfills and will take 500 years to biodegrade. 90% of Americans use disposable diapers which are rough on the planet and baby's skin.
  • Cloth/hybrid diaper systems are available.
  • Disposable diapers will cost $2,000-$3,000, while cloth only costs $300-$800.

The Gear
  • Whenever possible, buy used.
  • Off-gassing has already occurred in used furniture.
  • Stay away from used crib mattresses and car seats.
