Fire-Resistant Landscapes with Shirley Bovshow
Brush fire season is ablazin' this summer because heat dries out the plants. Shirley Bovshow is here with tips to keep us safe from the flames.
How to Create Fire-Resistant Landscapes:
1. Maintain 30 ft. "defensible space" or buffer area between home and surrounding grass, trees, and shrubs.
2. Prune tree limbs so they're 10 ft. away from roof or walls. 3. Trim bottom branches of trees on hillside and near home so lower plants don't touch them. 4. Space tree crowns at least 10 ft. apart. 5. Remove dead wood and litter from landscape/plants. 6. Plant "fire-resistant" plants near home to delay spread of fire to home. 7. Remove pine needles and leaves from roof and rain gutters. 8. Don't allow plants near home to dry out. 9. Don't plant pine trees, cypress, junipers, or other resinous plants within 30 ft. of home. They can be highly explosive plants! Check out Shirley Bovshow's garden designing expertise at edenmakers.com and follow her on Twitter @EdenMaker.
